This biographical dictionary documents the lives of forgotten movers and shakers from the nineteenth century, preserving the stories of people whose contributions shaped their era but faded from popular memory.

The first volume, covering A to H, of a four-volume biographical dictionary. It gives short memoirs of people who died since 1850, from politicians and bishops to eccentrics and criminals, arranged alphabetically, with a preface on the author's approach.
